According to the Warfare History Network. Before Sargon modernized the army, Sumerian cities would operate with a number of militias. One change made by Sargon included a phalanx of six men with front rank men carrying rectangular shields.

Military power has surpassed Sargon’s and is now all over the world. They are used to protect their countries. What is the largest military in the world?
According to Statista, the largest military based on active personnel is China. By 2022, China will have 2 million active military personnel.
Despite having the largest active military, China does not have the largest military in terms of combined active personnel and reserves. According to the World Population Review, Vietnam has the largest active and reserve military at 5,482,000.
According to Statista, the United States has the largest military budget in 2021 at $801 billion.

There’s only one realistic way to compare military power, and luckily, there haven’t been many opportunities in the world lately.
Most Powerful Military Ranking
Despite potential powder kegs in the South China Sea, conflicts in Ukraine, and proxy wars in the Middle East, interstate warfare between the world’s military powers has been largely banished from the global scene (for now).
For a simple estimate of military power, we turned to the Global Power Index, which ranks 106 countries based on more than 50 factors, including total military budgets, available manpower and the amount of equipment in each country’s arsenal, as well as access to natural resources.
The index focuses on quantity, ignoring significant qualitative differences — for example, North Korea’s 78 submarines are not the most modern. Nor does it care about nuclear stockpiles, the biggest springboard in geopolitics. It does not penalize landlocked states for not having a permanent navy.
We’ve created a chart to compare the top 35 militaries according to the Global Firepower Index. The ranking was released in April (prior to events such as Russia’s invasion of eastern Ukraine in August, ISIS’s invasion of Iraq, and the firefight between Israel and Hamas) and contains a complex set of data that is subject to revisions and corrections.

The US ranks first in the world in terms of military spending of more than 600 billion dollars a year. China is a distant second, at nearly $130 billion, less than a third of America’s total spending.
According to a report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), the US has cut its defense budget by 7.8% as America gradually withdraws from military operations in countries such as Afghanistan and Iraq.
Aircraft carriers make a significant contribution to the country’s overall military strength. These large ships allow nations to extend their forces beyond their borders and across the globe. They are mainly mobile naval and air force bases. Aircraft carriers can also carry drones, which will significantly change the global surveillance game.
The US’s absolute monopoly on supercarriers would significantly increase the nation’s forward operating power. The US has deployed an aircraft carrier to the Persian Gulf to bolster its naval and air forces ahead of a possible strike against ISIS in Iraq. Russia has previously deployed an aircraft carrier to the Mediterranean to show its seriousness in supporting Assad in Syria.

An anomaly in the Global Firepower Index ranks North Korea as the world leader in submarines. And while it’s true that Pyongyang commands the largest submarine fleet on earth, most of these vessels are useless.
A third of North Korea’s submarines are noisy diesel-powered Romeos that date back to 1961. The weapons range of these submarines is only four miles, while modern U.S. submarines have a range of 150 miles. According to the US Department of Defense, this fleet is not sophisticated, but still robust.
NOW WATCH: This 26-year-old from Baltimore has traveled 35,000 miles to fight in the Libyan revolution. When it comes to manpower, no military in the world comes close to China’s. Global Firepower estimates that the People’s Republic has about 2 million active duty military personnel. By comparison, the United States has a much smaller number – 1.4 million – but in the assessment of the total strength of the world’s military forces, the United States comes out on top, ahead of Russia and China, respectively, in second and third place.
With Russian troops massing around Ukraine and the Kremlin’s increasingly aggressive stance, the potential for one of the world’s most powerful militaries to use its might in a new conflict appears at its highest for some time. Diplomatic efforts have not yet succeeded, and now it remains to be seen what Russia will do. Elsewhere, the threat of some form of conflict between China and the United States over Taiwan remains constant.

The index “uses more than 50 individual factors to determine a country’s PowerIndex score, covering categories ranging from military strength and finances to logistical capabilities and geography.” Although a rating of 0.000 represents a perfect score, it is considered unrealistically unattainable.
