What Military Hardware Has Been Built In Barrow-in-furness – The AS90 Braveheart is a 155mm self-propelled howitzer that entered service with the British Army in 1992. It is manufactured by BAE Systems Land Systems (RO Defense, formerly the armaments division of Vickers Shipbuilding and Engineering Ltd) in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria. 179 were built for the British Army.
AS90 deployed in March 2003 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. In July 2004, the UK Ministry of Defense announced plans to reduce the number of AS90 batteries by six. Three companies were withdrawn and a three-company AS90 regiment was reconfigured as a light artillery regiment to support a new light brigade.

The Desert AS90 was successfully tested in the Arizona desert in 1994 and in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia in 1996. This version with a 52 caliber barrel is known as the AS90 Braveheart.
BAE Systems has signed a license manufacturing agreement with HSW (Huta Stalowa Wola) in Poland for the production of the AS90 Braveheart. Two AS90 turrets mounted on a Polish OBRUM-built vehicle.
The crew consists of the driver plus four to three operators in the cupola, a commander, a gunner and a loader.
AS90 is equipped with three field regiments of Royal Horse Artillery and Royal Artillery. The howitzer is expected to operate until 2032.

It was expected to be operational in 2003, but the program was suspended while systems studies were conducted.
The Royal Ordnance division of BAE Systems manufactured the 52 caliber barrel, which increased the range by 40 km. Denel’s Somchem division is responsible for modular charging systems. The AS90 also test-fired the new Denel Assegai range of 155mm ammunition, which has been developed, including a Velocity Long-Range Artillery Projectile (VLAP).
In November 2007, the UK Ministry of Defense awarded Germany’s Gesellschaft fur Intelligente Wirksysteme GmbH (GIWS) a contract to equip the AS90 with Ballistic Sensor Fuzed Munitions (BSFM). The BSFM is a precision attack weapon with a range of 22.5 kilometers. Each BSFM contains two SFMs deployed on parachutes with infrared and/or radar sensors to find armored targets.

The British Army AS90 system participated in a firing trial using the Raytheon M982 Excalibur Ia-2 GPS/inertial guided extended-range 155mm projectile. Trials at the U.S. Army’s Yuma Proving Ground were completed in November 2006. The M982 Excalibur Ia-2 was successfully deployed in 2007. In April 2011, Raytheon was awarded a $173 million contract to produce the M982 Excalibur Ia-2 projectile.
The AS90 is available in 155mm, 39 or 52 caliber barrels. In trials, two AS90 howitzers were able to deliver a combined payload of 261 kilograms onto a target in less than 10 seconds. The autoloading system enables the gun to fire in less than 10 seconds at a burst rate of three rounds, a high rate of fire of six rounds per minute, and a sustained rate of fire of three minutes.
The gun does not require a stabilizing shovel, and is equipped with a recoil and hydrogen suspension system that allows the turret to move and fire in a full range of 360°.
A Dynamic Reference Unit (DRU) and electronic vehicle tilt compensation are used for precise positioning of the weapon system.

The range with conventional ammunition is 24.7 km. The AS90 can also fire auxiliary ammunition with a range of up to 30km. Fitting a 52 caliber barrel instead of the standard 39 caliber extended the range to over 40km. The current upgrade program includes an automatic ammunition handling system.
The landing is equipped with direct sights from Avimo (now part of Thales Optronics) for direct fire both day and night. For indirect fire, the Automatic Gun Mount System (AGLS) with electronic elevation and lateral drives provides 1 million (angle 3.375 min) accuracy and fast target engagement. The Display Unit (LDU) at this level is designed by VSEL. The commander’s station is equipped with an independent sight.
A barrel cooling system that provides a higher maximum rate of fire and a ballistic calculation system are in development.
The AS90 has been upgraded with a BAE Systems Laser Inertial Artillery Pointing System (LINAPS) digital sight. LINAPS provides the gunner with the position of the gun and the exact azimuth and elevation of the barrel. It includes a FIN3110 ring laser gyroscope based strapdown inertial navigation unit (INU) with embedded military GPS.

The vehicle’s all-welded steel armor construction can withstand the impact of 7.62mm and 14.5mm armor-piercing rounds, as well as 152mm shell splinters.
The Desert AS90 has a heat shield installed on the turret roof and solar reflective paint. Thermal blankets provide protection for the crew from hot metal burns.
The vehicle is powered by a 660hp V8 diesel engine from Cummins linked to a ZF Gears Ltd automatic transmission with four forward and two reverse gears.
The Desert AS90 features enhanced engine, transmission oil and auxiliary power unit cooling, and Diehl 940 pin tracks for better handling in the sand.

The hydropneumatic suspension was supplied by Horstmans Defense Systems UK. The vehicle can traverse slopes of up to 60 meters, vertical obstacles of 0.75 meters and ditches up to 2.8 meters wide, and is capable of fording water up to 1.5 meters deep. Our Barrow-in-Furness base is based in a historic shipyard on the seafront, in partnership with BAE Systems. Barrow has always been at the heart of British submarine production.
The Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) has over 100 people in Barrow and will be expanding its presence on site over the next few years.

Events in recent weeks suggest that Russia’s war on Ukraine will last for months, if not years. This will require NATO countries to develop new ways of providing military support to Ukraine. As these authors say, their transfer of Soviet-designed weapons to Ukraine was critical. For example, the Czech Republic has sent dozens of T-72 tanks and BMP-1 infantry fighting vehicles, while Slovakia has provided the S-300 air defense system. Given that the country has agreed to buy 250 M1A2 Abrams tanks from the US, it is likely that Poland will offer similar support (and, according to some sources, has already). Warsaw had hundreds of Soviet-designed T-72 tanks and their Polish counterparts.
However, this is not enough to adequately support the Ukrainian army, which faces a much larger Russian army and must not only defend itself but also reclaim some of the territory occupied by the Kremlin. Therefore, Kyiv will need additional supplies of military equipment produced by NATO countries. Ukrainian soldiers quickly mastered the use of advanced Western weapons such as Javelin and NLAW anti-tank systems, Stinger and Starlight man-portable air defense systems, and switchblade loitering ammunition.
Since the Ukrainian army needs to spend more time and energy learning to use more advanced weapons, NATO countries should start training programs immediately. Such a project could help Ukraine beat Russia.
