What Do You Say When You Swear Into The Military – “Holy mother shirt campers!” a character on “The Good Place,” a television show set in a version of the afterlife where swearing is forbidden (as in this newspaper, often). In a way, this celestial censorship was realistic.
Found that there are curse words in several languages that are not related to each other. They are less likely than other words to contain the consonant sounds L, R, W or Y. And more family-friendly versions of curses often add these sounds, like the R in “shirt” or “fork.” The findings suggest that some basic rules can bind the world’s languages, no matter how different they are.

What Do You Say When You Swear Into The Military
“In English, some of the worst words seem to have common phonetic properties,” said Ryan McKay, a psychologist at Royal Holloway, University of London. They are often short and thin. They also tend to include P, T or K sounds, “without giving obvious examples,” Dr. McKay said. These sounds are called stop consonants because they interrupt the flow of air while we speak.

Dr. McKay teamed up with his colleague Shiri Lev-Ari to find out if this familiar pattern went beyond English. They wondered if it could represent what is called sound symbolism.
Sound symbolism is when a word sounds like what it means. One type is onomatopoeia; for example, the words that describe the meow of a cat or the crowing of a rooster are similar in many languages. Globally, words related to the nose usually include the nasal N
Sounds, and words related to smallness, usually have the “ee” sound (like “mini” or “teensy weensy”), like the cry of a small creature.
To look for swearing patterns, the researchers asked native speakers of Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Korean, and Russian to list the most offensive words they could think of. Once they compiled a list of the most commonly used titles in each language, the researchers compared these to neutral words in the same language.
Is Swearing A Sign Of A Limited Vocabulary?
In these languages, they did not find the hard stop consonants that are common in English swear words. Dr. Simple words are defined by what is missing: the consonant sounds L, R, W and Y.
Later, scientists looked for the same phenomenon with speakers of different languages: Arabic, Chinese, Finnish, French, German and Spanish. Subjects listened to pairs of words in a language they did not speak, and guessed which word in each pair was the stimulus. In fact, all words were invented. For example, the researchers started with the Albanian word “zog”, for “bird”, and created a pair of fake words “yog” and “tsog”. Subjects were more likely to assume that non-approach words, such as “tsog”, were curse words.
Finally, the researchers looked into the dictionary for English swear words and their refined versions, also called shortened swear words (“darn”, “frigging”, etc. Again, the pure versions have more L, R, W and Include Y.
“What this paper finds for the first time is that taboo words in languages that are unrelated can be similar,” said Benjamin Bergen, a cognitive scientist at the University of California, San Diego, who did not participate in the study.

Unlike other cases such as dick-a-doodle-doos or words for “nose,” these words share not a meaning, but a function. They are meant to be annoying. The results suggest that “not all voices are created equal for depression,” the authors wrote.
“It’s something new,” Dr. Bergen said. “Perhaps the things we want to do with words lead us to expect those words to have particular sounds.”

” It would also be nice to find out why those consonants are missing. “There may be some deeper explanation,” he said.
Say You Swear
A 20th-century linguistic principle held that the sounds of words are arbitrary: Any word can have any meaning. Dr. With bad words, though, as in other cases of sound symbolism, the sounds themselves carry meaning.
French is an exception, she noted — swear words in French have softer consonant sounds than other words. However, when native French speakers heard a pair of foreign words, they were less likely to assume that the words with L, R, W and Y were cursing sounds.Lt.
