Army Aims To Match Soldiers’ Talents With Best Mos > Joint Base San Antonio > News

At the division, platoon, and company levels, the U.S. Army is not as good as its allies, according to an Army captain’s report. Scott Metz writes Capt. J. Scott Metz: “U.S. units are not as ready or combat-ready as their multinational partners at the company level and below.” “Many of our allies, and perhaps some of our potential enemies, are now tactically better than we are at the company level and below because we are not sufficiently trained on the main station.”

In other words, they don’t learn the basics of maneuvering before going for tertiary training at the Joint Multinational Readiness Center (JMRC), the largest US Army training base in Hohenfels, Germany. should know. Until recently, Capt. Metz was an observer/observer/instructor at JMRC. He notes that he has worked with units from 11 countries.

Here is one example. He writes: “Units default to direct line attacks because that is all they have practiced.” On one turn, the unit “defaulted a frontal attack in the open without using the terrain to its advantage in every engagement. In one of those engagements, a stationary platoon sat in the open, engaging an enemy Leopard tank. Leopard fired about 10 times from 10 positions in 60 seconds and didn’t It never stops moving while taking hidden routes to and from multiple firing positions.” He adds, “I’ve never seen an American tank do anything like this at JMRC.”

Metz blames senior army commanders who claim readiness is their top priority but don’t give small units enough time to train enough to be truly ready. He speaks truth to power.

For the first time in decades, Americans are evenly divided when asked if the United States has the No. 1 military in the world.

A recent Gallup poll found that only 49% of Americans think the United States has the best military—the lowest percentage on record in the 23 years Gallup asked this question, and far less than the 59% who said the United States is No. 1 one year ago, in February 2015.

And that matters to people: A Gallup poll shows that nearly two-thirds of Americans say the United States should be the number one military in the world.

Only half of the population thinks the United States is #1. That may sound crazy given the size and scope of the US military.

Take military spending, the most obvious indicator of a nation’s strength, for example. The United States spent more than $600 billion on its military in 2014, outselling its closest competitor, China, by nearly $400 billion, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. The next seven countries on the list – China, Russia, Saudi Arabia, France, the United Kingdom, India and Germany – have spent about $600 billion.

This is where skeptics will point out—and rightly so—that you cannot compare one nation’s military spending to another without accounting for the country’s size and economic capacity—not to mention differences in labor, materials, and production costs.

In other words, a million dollars in the United States will pay for fewer soldiers and buy fewer supplies and materiel than a million dollars in China or Russia — so the United States has to spend more just to keep up.

This can be especially important when it comes to the workforce: Personnel costs account for more than half of the Department of Defense’s budget (and that doesn’t include the billions of dollars outside the defense budget that go toward benefits and services for veterans, among other expenses).

US military spending is 3.5% of GDP, which puts it in 22nd place – mostly behind a group of countries in the Middle East and Africa. Russia ranks 12th with a military allocation of 4.5% of GDP, and China, with 2% of GDP, is 43rd.

And if you look at military spending as a share of total government spending, the United States ranks 26th. Our defense spending is great – but so is all of our spending.

On a per capita basis, the United States ranks fifth — far surpassing rival geopolitical powers Russia and China.

Microsoft Defends Working With The Us Military:

Adjusting for these variables, US military superiority appears smaller than the stark picture I paint by comparing $600 billion in spending to anything else.

“At no time in my career have I been more confident than at this moment in saying we have the most powerful military on the face of the planet.”

But by looking at other metrics directly related to a country’s war-making capabilities—such as manpower, equipment, technology, and weapons—the United States just doesn’t keep pace with the likes of China and Russia. Its massive financial power has translated into an arsenal of weapons and land, via its naval and air warfare capabilities that are not only No. 1 in the world but No. 1 by a large margin.

Perhaps the United States does not rank first in the size of our military. Data from the International Institute for Strategic Studies put the United States third in terms of armed forces personnel, behind population giants China and India. But this does not refer to the education, level of training or quality of these employees.

The United States has a near monopoly on aircraft carriers, and they are one of the greatest symbols of military power. Its carriers are roughly equal in number to those in the rest of the world combined – plus American carriers are more technologically advanced than almost all others. Not to mention a new $13 billion aircraft carrier about to hit the open seas.

And let’s not forget that after decades of the Cold War-era arms race, the United States came first in nuclear weapons. The United States has about 6,314 nuclear warheads stored and deployed, according to data compiled by the Arms Control Association. Russia comes close to matching that, at 6,082, but no other country breaks the 500 mark.

The tentacles of the United States have spread far and wide across the world: it is believed to have more foreign military bases than any other people, nation or empire in history.

A report by Credit Suisse in September 2015 ranked countries according to their “Index of Military Power,” and the United States came in first, easily beating out Russia in second and China in third. Credit Suisse said in the report that the US fleet of 13,900 aircraft, 920 attack helicopters, 20 aircraft carriers and 72 submarines far exceeds the military might of any of its close competitors.

Why Us Troops Should Stay In Afghanistan

One simple reason: We’re in an election year. As Vox recently pointed out, the more Republican candidates attack President Obama’s foreign policy (and accuse him of destroying the military), the more Americans come to believe that America’s military power is less than it should be.

Another reason may be the changing nature of what we understand as “war”. It appears that years of fighting in the “war on terror” has not reduced the threat, leading many to wonder if the military in its current format is incapable of fighting the likes of ISIS.

However, another possible reason is that only a small portion of Americans have served in the military – and thus are not in a good position to know one way or the other.

Recently, Air Force General Paul Silva, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (and certainly in a position to know), was asked about the Republican candidates’ claims of military weakness.
