“Every Russian missile that hit our cities and every bomb dropped on our people, on our children only adds black paint to the story that will describe everyone on whom the decision depended. [The] decision whether to help Ukraine with modern weapons” , Zelenskyy added.

In the video, the Ukrainian leader also praised the troops in the besieged port city of Mariupol, saying their defense helped “hold back a significant part of the enemy forces” and bought Ukraine “invaluable time”.
For Holocaust survivors living in Ukraine, it can be painful to emigrate to the former perpetrators’ country. But, given the Russian invasion, most are just grateful that the opportunity to escape exists.
One of the last displaced, Liliya Vaksman, fled the besieged city of Dnipro. As a child she experienced World War II, persecution and escape. And now she, at 82, has it again.
“I’m just shocked by what’s happening in Ukraine now,” Vaksman said. “I just can’t believe the same thing is happening again as when I was a kid.”
She met with Vaksman and two other Holocaust survivors who recently arrived in the German capital of Berlin. For more on their journey, read the full story here.

A Red Cross evacuation mission to help civilians escape Mariupol has not yet arrived in the besieged port city.
An International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) spokesperson said the convoy left on Saturday after being repulsed in an earlier attempt on Friday.

“They are spending the night en route to Mariupol and have yet to reach the city,” an ICRC spokesman told AFP news agency.
Russia’s Defense Ministry blamed the Red Cross, saying the convoys left too late to reach the city in time, according to comments reported by Russia’s state news agency Interfax.
Correspondent Nick Connolly in Kiev said Russia was facing mounting pressure to ensure the safe evacuation of civilians from Mariupol.
“This is such a big story internationally – so much attention on this, that there is a lot of pressure on the Russians to make it possible,” Connolly said.

After speaking to people who fled Mariupol in recent days, he said they describe the situation as “far from a well-organized and brilliant operation, it’s all quite chaotic on the ground.”
Nearly 300 people were buried in a mass grave in the town of Bucha, not far from Kyiv, according to the city’s mayor, AFP news agency reported.
“In Bucha, we have already buried 280 people in mass graves,” Mayor Anatoly Fedoruk told AFP, adding that the streets were littered with bodies.
As Ukrainian troops search cleared areas around Kiev, the defense ministry said soldiers found more civilians who had been killed.

“Dead civilians are seen near a highway 20km from Kiev,” Ukraine’s defense ministry said in a Twitter post. In the photo, the bodies of four or five women are covered with a blanket.
The ministry said Russian troops “tried to burn [the bodies] right there by the side of the road”.
The Interfax Ukraine news agency reported that Russia has given indications that a draft peace treaty is at an advanced stage. Quoting Ukrainian negotiator David Arakhamia, the agency said the negotiations had reached the point of direct consultations.
Arakhamia reportedly told Ukrainian television that Russia had accepted Ukraine’s overall position, except for its position on Crimea.

He said that if Russian President Vladimir Putin were to meet with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the venue would most likely be in Turkey. Arakhamia said Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called the two leaders on Friday and “seems to confirm from him that they are ready to arrange a meeting in the near future.”
Ukrainian troops have regained full control of the entire territory in the Kiev region, according to Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Malyar.
A human rights group following the detention of anti-war activists in Russia said 208 people were arrested across the country during protests held on Saturday.
According to OVD-Info, there have been protests in 17 cities. Most of the arrests were made in Moscow and St. Petersburg.

The organization says more than 15,300 arrests have been made since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The bodies of at least 20 men dressed in civilian clothes were found lying on a street in a retaken city near Kiev, French news agency AFP reported.
According to the agency, one of the man’s hands was tied behind his back. The discovery was made in the city of Bucha, recently retaken after the withdrawal of Russian troops.

A regional governor of Ukraine says thousands of Ukrainians are returning to the country despite the ongoing war. Maksym Kozytskyy posted on Facebook that more than 19,000 citizens returned to Ukraine in a 24-hour period.
According to these figures, more people had returned to the country than the 14,000 who had left during the same period.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has called for the Russian war in Ukraine to end “quickly”.
Speaking in the West German city of Essen, Scholz said Russian President Vladimir Putin was pursuing “territorial claims that stem from the imperialist visions of previous centuries” which he said were now “destroying Russia’s future”.

“He [Putin] didn’t expect Ukraine to defend itself. He believed there would be people standing there waving flags and cheering. That’s not the case. Everyone is defending themselves,” the chancellor said.
“All the difficulties that the world economy is facing today, which were already big enough because of the coronavirus pandemic and its economic and social effects, are now getting even bigger because of this war. I say: it is a destruction of the future, far beyond Russia and Ukraine,” Scholz warned.
Kyiv’s claim that Russian troops are massing in Moldova’s tiny breakaway region of Transnistria to conduct provocations on the border with Ukraine is “absolutely false,” authorities in Tiraspol said.
The Ukrainian army chief said Russian troops already in Transnistria were preparing for “a demonstration of readiness for an offensive and, possibly, hostilities against Ukraine.”

Transnistria is a Russian-backed region of Moldova that broke away after a brief civil war in the early 1990s and is not recognized by most countries.
In response, Transnistria’s foreign ministry insisted that the region’s leaders had repeatedly “declared the absence of any threat to Ukraine”.
The Moldovan foreign ministry also said on Saturday that “there is no information to confirm the mobilization of troops in the Transnistria region” and that “state institutions are closely monitoring the security situation in the region”.
Klitschko, brother of Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, posted a video on Twitter in German after two days of talks in Berlin with German ministers, including Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

“The support Germany is providing to Ukraine is remarkable,” he said. “Whether it’s material aid, the supply of essential goods or defensive weapons.”
Klitschko added that the support given by Berlin was proportionate to the “horrors of the war started by Putin’s regime”.
He said Germany and Ukraine were “united like never before because together they defend international law and the fundamental value of freedom.”
The future of the International Space Station (ISS) is at risk after Western space agencies miss a deadline set by Moscow to lift sanctions, the head of Russia’s space program said.
Dmitry Rogozin, the head of Roscosmos, has implied on Russian state TV that the sanctions, some of which predate the Russian invasion of Ukraine, could disrupt the operation of the Russian spacecraft that serves the ISS with cargo flights.
Rogozin stressed that the Western partners need the space station and that “no one but us can supply the station with fuel.”
A NASA astronaut took a Russian pass to Earth Wednesday after a US record 355 days on the ISS, returning with two cosmonauts.
Rogozin later wrote on his Telegram channel that Western counterparts promised to promote “further cooperation on the ISS and its operations.”
French Carrier Strike Group Begins 2021 Deployment
Ukrainian presidential adviser Oleksiy Arestovych told national television on Saturday that heavy battles were expected in the east and south of the country, as well as in the besieged city of Mariupol.

Russian protest monitor OVD-Info said at least 176 people were arrested for demonstrating against the war in Ukraine on Saturday.
