EUCOM’s mission is to protect and defend the US by preventing conflict, supporting partnerships such as NATO and countering transnational threats. It commands the US Army in Europe, the US Air Forces in Europe, and the US Marine Corps Forces in Europe and Africa, all of which have installations in Germany.

In fact, Germany has the largest number of US troops in Europe — about 38,600, although the numbers fluctuate as troops are regularly rotated to other countries. It also has more military personnel than the US maintains in any other country besides Japan.
However, the numbers have declined in recent years. German government figures show that the number of US troops stationed in Germany fell by more than half, from 72,400 to 33,250, between 2006 and 2018, as the US military responded to a security situation a changing and increasingly complex world. .

Establishments also often employ significant numbers of local nationals and contribute to the economic development of the surrounding German communities, whose businesses provide goods and services. Past installation closings, such as the army garrison at Bamberg in 2014, have taken a toll on the local economy, and many Germans who live near active US military installations have expressed opposition to potential troop reductions.
But the extent of the US military presence in Germany is not limited to personnel: The US also maintains planes at other non-US air force bases in Germany. In addition, thanks to NATO’s nuclear sharing arrangement, an estimated 20 nuclear weapons are kept at Germany’s Büchel Air Base in western Germany — which has drawn much criticism from the Germans.
Another controversial arrangement is the use of Ramstein Air Base as a control center for drone strikes in Yemen and elsewhere.
The US military presence in Germany is a legacy of the post-WWII Allied occupation, which lasted from 1945 to 1955. During this time, millions of US, British, French and Soviet troops were stationed in Germany.

In West Germany, the profession was governed by the Career Statute, which was signed in April 1949, when the country was founded. However, the Occupation Statute was succeeded by another agreement with its NATO partners. West Germany signed this agreement, known as the Convention on the Presence of Foreign Forces in the Federal Republic of Germany, in 1954. The number of military personnel in the US has declined since the end of the Cold War in 1990, when, according to the German government, there were an estimated 400,000 foreign troops stationed on German soil. About half of these were US military personnel, but they were gradually withdrawn as tensions eased with what was left of the Soviet Union, and due to conflicts elsewhere, such as World War I. Just How Strong Is The Chinese Military?
It is true that over a period of 20 years, the US spent more than $80 billion to train and equip military forces in Afghanistan. This number, however, does not reflect the value of the equipment left behind after America withdrew from the area. The US military removed or demilitarized billions of dollars worth of equipment before it left Afghanistan. An exact count of the military equipment currently in the hands of the Taliban is not available, although one expert estimated the total value to be closer to $10 billion.
In August 2021, shortly after the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan following the withdrawal of the United States military, photos and videos began circulating online showing Taliban forces in possession of American-made weapons. While it is true that American-made vehicles, weapons and other supplies have fallen into the hands of the Taliban, the value of this equipment has been wildly exaggerated as rumors and memes spread on social media.
One persistent claim is that the Taliban seized more than $80 billion worth of American military equipment. This is not true.

The $80 billion figure does not reflect the amount of equipment the Taliban received after America withdrew from Afghanistan. Rather, this number reflects the amount of money the United States has spent on training and equipping military forces in Afghanistan over the past twenty years.
“The U.S. has provided an estimated $83 billion worth of training and equipment to Afghan security forces since 2001. This year alone, U.S. military aid to Afghan forces totaled $3 billion. Price tags vary to put on American military equipment still in Afghanistan. In the fog of war – or withdrawal – Afghanistan has always been a black box without much sunshine.”
Most of this money was spent on items other than military equipment (such as salaries and training) so the equipment received by the Taliban cannot be worth more than $80 billion. According to a report by the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR), about $18 billion was spent on equipment and transportation between 2005 and 2021.
John Pike, director of GlobalSecurity.org, told Politifact that the Taliban probably received less than $10 billion worth of equipment.
