How Many Years In The Military To Be A Veteran
The Marine Corps is one of the most elite fighting forces in the world. The Marines are part of the Department of the Navy and work closely with the US Navy at sea. The mission of the Marines is unique among the services. Marines serve on US Navy ships, defend naval bases, guard US embassies, and are a quick-strike force to defend US interests anywhere in the world.

For many of the Marine Corps’ duties, approximately 182,000 officers and enlisted Marines fly aircraft and helicopters; manage radar equipment; manage armored vehicles; gather intelligence; survey and mapping of the territory; maintain and repair radios, computers, jeeps, trucks, tanks and aircraft; and complete hundreds of other challenging tasks.
The Marine Corps is the national emergency service. Thousands of Marines are aboard landing craft ready to respond to an international crisis. This ability to mobilize quickly allowed the Marines to become the United States’ rapid reaction force.
The army is a much larger force and is used in larger and longer conflicts. Sometimes the army replaces the marines after a while, as happened in Somalia.
The Marines also see themselves as a self-sustaining force, bringing their own air force, artillery, and logistical support into battle. Of course, Marines have to travel on Navy ships to get to their destination.

The Marines also proudly say that “every Marine is a shooter.” In other words, whether you’re in the infantry, air wing, or working as a computer engineer, you’ll get the proper training so that you can act as an infantryman when needed. To be fair, this mentality doesn’t exist in all army support units. .
ASVAB is a test that measures your ability. It consists of 10 short individual tests covering word knowledge, paragraph comprehension, arithmetic reasoning, mathematical knowledge, general science, car and store information, mechanical understanding, electronics information, numerical operations, and coding speed. When you take the ASVAB before you enlist in the military, not only do you get scores on each of these individual tests, but the results of several individual tests are combined to give you three academic composite scores: verbal, math, and academic ability.
Officer candidates who do not achieve a minimum score on the SAT or ACT must take the ASVAB and score at least 115 on the Electronics Repair Composite.
Although the Marine Corps says that “every Marine is a gunner,” infantry units make up no more than 15% of the total strength of the service. You will be able to work in one of 35 career areas that offer over 300 different jobs.

Boot camp lasts 13 weeks, followed by three weeks of Infantry School or Marine Combat Training.
The boot camp is located at the Parris Island, South Carolina recruiting depot on the east coast and at the San Diego recruiting depot on the west coast. All women will receive recruit training at Parris Island.
Recruit training is rigorous, demanding and complex. The overall goal of recruit training is to instill in recruits the skills, knowledge, discipline, pride, and self-confidence needed to be a Marine.
In the first few days at the recruiting depot, the recruit is assigned to a platoon, given a basic set of uniforms and equipment, undergoes an additional medical examination, and undergoes further classification tests. Each platoon is led by a team of three Marine instructors. A typical day of training for recruits starts with getting up at 05:00 (5 am), continues with drill, physical training, and a few weapons handling and behavior sessions, and ends with tapping at 21:00 (9 p.m.).

We can’t stress enough how important it is for you to prepare for running and physical fitness training. It is recommended that recruits begin training with the ability to run three miles in less than 24 minutes.

There are several ways to become a Marine Corps officer. In almost all cases, you will need a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
All Marine Corps officers will graduate from Basic School (TBS) after receiving a commission. TBS runs for six months and will cover leadership, ground navigation, weapons qualifications, small unit tactics, and communications.
Some graduates of the Naval Academy enter the Marine Corps. While in Annapolis, midshipmen have the opportunity to see firsthand the various areas open to them.

The Officer Candidate School is offered to college graduates or those in the process of earning a bachelor’s degree who wish to become officers in the Marine Corps.
The Marines offer two programs for those who qualify: the Platoon Leader Course (PLC) and the Officer Candidate Class (OCC). Both programs are based in Quantico, Virginia.
PLC is for freshmen, sophomores, or juniors in college. Applicants must complete either two six-week courses or a 10-week course before earning a bachelor’s degree.

The 10 or 12 week officer training is designed to measure your leadership potential; you have to prove yourself. Upon graduation, you decide whether to accept an assignment as a Marine Corps officer.
We suggest that you contact the Officer Selection Officer (OSO). The application process includes obtaining a minimum cumulative score of 1000 for the SAT, 45 for the ACT, or 115 for ASVAB Composite Electronics Repair. You must also complete a medical examination at MEPS. Your application package will also include an essay written by you and written statements of your recommendations. You can also earn a commission in the Marine Corps by joining the Naval ROTC. The Naval Reserve Officer Training Program (NROTC) offers tuition and other financial benefits at more than 60 of the country’s leading colleges and universities. Two- and four-year subsidized scholarships are offered. Members receive a monthly allowance. Two- and four-year non-subsidized NROTC programs are also offered. These are called college programs and provide a monthly cash allowance for juniors and seniors.

This program provides an opportunity for Marines who have completed two years of college to apply for admission to the Officer Candidate School and subsequent appointment as officers without restrictions.
The Marine Corps Enlisted Education Program provides selected Marines enlisted (who have had no college experience) the opportunity to earn a bachelor’s degree by attending a college or university as a full-time student. Marines participating in this program who have completed a bachelor’s degree and subsequently completed officer candidate training are promoted to the rank of second lieutenant.
Warrant officers are technicians assigned duties only in their area of expertise. All other officers are considered “unrestricted” and serve a wide variety of assignments during their careers. The warrant officer program allows those qualified candidates who are at the rank of sergeant or above at the time of application to be selected and appointed as a permanent warrant officer.
