How Many Us Military Bases Are There In The World
“Installation” is defined as “a military base, camp, location, station, yard, cter, homeport facility for any ship, or other activity under the jurisdiction of the Department of Defse, including leased space, that is controlled by, or primarily supports DoD activities. An installation may consist of one or more sites” (geographically separated parcels of real estate).
Us Military In The Pacific
The United States operates a global network of military installations and is by far the largest operator of military bases in the world, with locations in dozens of nations on every continent, with 38 “named bases”
That has active personnel, US National Guard, reserve, or civilian personnel as of September 30, 2014. Its largest, in terms of personnel, is Ramstein Air Base, in Germany, with almost 9, 200.
The Pentagon stated in 2013 that there are “about” 5,000 total bases, with “about” 600 of them abroad.
Due to the passive and often classified nature of this information, there is no comprehensive list with the exact number or location of all bases, stations and installations. The total number of foreign sites with installations and facilities that are either in active use and service, or that may be activated and operated by US and allied military personnel, is just over 1,000.

The United States operates drone bases from three locations around Niger. These posts are manned by several hundred US Special Operations Forces in a non-combat role, assisting Niger’s military with training and surveillance.
There were roughly 1,500–2,000 US Marines and Special Operations in Syria, spread across 12 different facilities, which were used as training bases for Kurdish rebels.

Large bases or “Bases”: Defined as military installations larger than 4 hectares (10 acres) or costing more than $10 million. These bases typically house more than 200 US military personnel. 439 or 60 percent of US foreign bases fall under this category.
Small bases or “Lily Pads”: These bases are smaller than 4 hectares (10 acres) or have a value of less than $10 million. These include cooperative security posts and forward operating sites. The remaining 40 percent of US foreign bases fall under this category.

According to global US military deployment data published in the Conflict Management and Peace Science Journal, the US had approximately 173,000 troops deployed in 159 countries as of 2020.
As with US bases, the countries with the most US troops include Japan with 53,700, Germany with 33,900 and South Korea with 26,400.
According to the Watson Institute at Brown University, between 1.9 and three million US service members have served in Afghanistan and Iraq since 2001, with more than half deployed more than once.
