There’s plenty to do in New York year-round, but when you decide to visit the Big Apple depends on your specific priorities and interests. Here are the best times to visit New York City, depending on your preferences:
The weather in New York can be unpredictable, but September and May are consistently pleasant and comfortable. Central Park is filled with colorful foliage and beautiful blooming trees and flowers that you can take in thanks to the mild weather. Check out our guide to what to do in Central Park to plan your visit.
In my experience, September and May are ideal for outdoor and indoor activities. You can also avoid the humidity of the city in the summer and the cold of the winter months. Regardless of the season, there are always things to do in New York, which we will discuss later in this article.

If you’re visiting NYC on the cheap, the cheapest time to visit NYC is in early January and February. These are the best months to save money and find some great deals. In tourism, they usually fall right after the holiday season and during the cold winter months. You can also avoid the tourist crowds in downtown Manhattan.
Despite the colder temperatures, there are plenty of events in New York during the winter months. Plan your trip in January to take advantage of Hotel Week, Restaurant Week and 2 Broadway ticket prices.
Looking for more ways to focus on saving money? The New York Pass gives you free admission to many New York attractions and events in the Big Apple. Visit the iconic Empire State Building, the American Museum of Natural History and New York’s best museums to escape the cold.

Fun Things To Do In Nyc At Night
Visiting New York with kids is a wonderful way to experience the city through their eyes in a new way. Like many destinations, the best time to visit New York with families and children is during the warmer summer months. Remember that Memorial Day and Labor Day are high season in NYC, so it’s important to plan ahead.
During the summer months, there are many family-friendly events if you’re planning to visit NYC. Popular activities include visiting the Bronx Zoo, taking boat trips, exploring playgrounds, and attending music classes and outdoor concerts in city parks. Be sure to stay hydrated and bring plenty of sunscreen—temperatures can reach triple digits (plus humidity!) toward the end of the summer season in late August.
Many locals travel out of town on summer weekends, so this can be a great time to explore. If visiting with the family in the summer is not possible, then experiencing the Christmas season with children is a spectacular alternative.

One Times Square
Not surprisingly, budget-friendly January and February are among the least crowded times to visit NYC. Thanks to the freezing temperatures, the number of tourists in winter is minimal, in contrast to the bustling summer months.
Expect lows of 30 degrees with occasional snow and ice, so pack your warmest layers. There is nothing more magical than Central Park covered in snow!
Hotel prices will also be more favorable in the shoulder season. Use these savings to try ice skating at Rockefeller Center or Central Park, enjoy classic New York restaurants, or catch a game at Madison Square Garden.
Broadway Week is held twice a year, in September and January. Note that most theaters are closed on Mondays, but you can purchase theater tickets for matinee and night performances to make the most of your visit.

Broadway and performing arts season usually starts in September, so this is the perfect time to visit NYC and see new shows and performances before tickets sell out. Find cheaper tickets in January thanks to two-for-one deals. Thanks to the lull in tourism, it is easier to get tickets for popular New York performances.

It’s a great time to enjoy delicious food in NYC during Restaurant Week, whether it’s winter (January) or summer (July). There are over 300 restaurants in the neighborhoods offering lunch and dinner, often multi-course, which is a perfect way to try new places and spend less money.
Note that these deals are only offered during the week, so if you’re in the mood for a mouth-watering meal, plan your trip accordingly. Be sure to book in advance as these places book up quickly! The “week” now lasts for three weeks in January and February, so there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy delicious food and desserts.
New York’s Countdown To 2023 Begins In Times Square
If you’re a sports fan, New York is the ideal place to catch a game (or two). Home to Yankee Stadium, Madison Square Garden, and the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, New York offers many venues during the sports seasons. Even if you’re not a big sports fan (like me), it’s worth going to a game – the home team spirit is contagious!
Baseball season (go Yankees!) starts in April, so a spring visit is perfect for a Yankee Stadium home game. More of a basketball fan? Head to Madison Square Garden to watch the NY Knicks and other teams play during Match Madness. MSG is also home to the NY Rangers hockey team, whose season begins in October.
Do you support the Giants? Hop on the train from Penn Station (near the Empire State Building) to Metlife Stadium in New Jersey. Yes, the home track isn’t technically in New York! Of course, don’t miss the tennis stars at the US Open in Queens, New York in August and September.
Many people visit New York specifically to get into the festive mood in the weeks leading up to Christmas. One of my favorite things to do in mid-December is walking around downtown Manhattan at night to see the extravagant Christmas decorations, holiday windows, and light displays.

Holiday shows like The Nutcracker Ballet at Lincoln Center and The Rockette’s Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall are perfect activities for anyone visiting New York this holiday season!
If you want to avoid the holiday rush and crowds, plan your visit for early January. Most of the holiday decorations will still be up, but there will be a drop in tourism in the weeks after New Year’s Eve and during the busy holiday season. Hotel prices will be cheaper, attractions will be less crowded, and you can celebrate the holidays a little longer!
Winter in New York may be the cheapest time to visit, but you’ll experience cold weather all the time. Average high temperatures are in the 30s, and Central Park is covered in snow at times. Grab a hot chocolate to keep you warm and pop into the Metropolitan Museum of Art
