Research suggests that spending time in nature can increase mental and physical health and enhance creativity. Researchers at the American Public Media Research Lab asked how often people get outdoors and what prevents them from spending more time in nature.

The survey indicated that two-thirds of American adults spend their free time in nature at least once or twice a month, including nearly half who said they spend time outdoors at least once a week.

Among adults, the groups that spend the most leisure time in nature are those aged 18-34, those with college degrees, and those in the North Central region, which includes North Dakota, Minnesota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin, and the western states. About a third of each of these groups reported spending time in nature “several times a week.”

One in six American adults, however, reported that they “never” spent free time in nature. Groups most likely to stay indoors include those 65 and older, those in lower-income households, and African Americans.

Question: “How often do you spend free time in nature? This includes things like going to a park, going on a hike, or going to the beach. This does not include activities such as organized sports such as basketball or baseball.” Source: APM Survey (April 30 – May 5, 2019). “Don’t know” responses are not shown.

Those in their traditional retirement years are nearly three times more likely than younger adults to avoid, or feel prevented from, spending free time in nature. Of those aged 65 and over, 32% said they never spend time in nature, compared to 12% of those aged 18-64.

Those in households with annual incomes below $25,000 are also twice as likely as those in households with annual incomes above $75,000 to never spend time in nature.

Non-Hispanic black adults are twice as likely as non-Hispanic white adults to report that they never spend leisure time in nature.

When asked about “the biggest thing that prevents you from spending more time in nature”, the most common answers had to do with work obligations.

Almost a third of respondents gave answers similar to that given by a 43-year-old woman from North Carolina: “Having to work, not much time left to do it.”

Work reasons are the most common response category for every demographic we can assess in this survey, except those 65 and older. These responses are especially common among people aged 35 to 54, parents and Hispanics.

Health-related answers are the second most common reason people give for not spending more time in nature. Respondents report a variety of health and disability problems, including difficulty walking, blindness and heart problems.

Up and down the economic ladder, many working Americans, and especially those raising children, are pressed for time, wishing they had more to devote to leisure. activities (or even just sleep). At the same time, research has indicated that people who are busy tend to be happier than those who are idle, whether their work is purposeful or not.

A research paper published late last year investigated this trade-off, trying to determine how much leisure time is best. Its authors looked at the relationship between the amount of “discretionary time” people had—basically, how much time people spend awake and doing whatever they want—and how satisfied they were with their lives. (Some examples of “discretionary” activities were watching television, socializing, going to the movies, spending time with family, and doing nothing.)
