Can The Military Force You To Get A Covid Vaccine – U.S. Army privates lie prone as they wait to move through a buddy team’s live fire range during their seventh week of basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C., Sept. 19, 2015. (Sgt. Ken Scar/U.S. Army)

Yes, it is possible to fail basic training. You can go through the trouble of leaving your home, job, family and friends and come back a failure. In fact, this happens to about 15% of the recruits who join the recruits each year. Too many recruits I talk to think that it is impossible to fail basic training.

From someone who has spoken to thousands of recruits over the years, let me tell you the top three reasons why you can return home without completing basic training.

“SGT Volkin, I train every day and I get straight A’s in school. My fear for basic training is not about my ability to fail; my fear is that I will be kicked for being too tough. If the drill sergeants try to boss around me, I’m afraid that my subconscious fighting skills in karate [I’m a black belt] will take over, and I’ll strike and injure a drill sergeant. How can I control the fighting power that’s been instilled in me? Since I have straight A’s and am already a combat force, can I get a waiver from my recruiter so I don’t have to attend basic training?”

No, this is not a joke. This is an actual email that I had to read and respond to. My answer is below (name withheld to preserve anonymity):

“Dear X, you can’t get a pardon because you’re such a wonderful person. The fact that you would ask that question shows you have no idea what you’re getting yourself into. You

Get yelled at by your drill sergeants — and judging by your personality — probably many times a day. Not only will you not hit them, you will probably pee your pants the first time you get yelled at. My advice to you is not to be overconfident; your ego may be your worst enemy. Best wishes.”

Someone may have told you that joining the is a great resource for paying back college loans (which is true). Someone may have also told you that joining will give direction and structure to your life (which is also true). However, if you don’t join the organization because you really want to be there and serve your country, your chances of failure skyrocket. Mentally, you’ll have a very hard time understanding why you’re really there, why you should keep being there, and why you shouldn’t just up and walk away (ie, go AWOL). It is perfectly fine to subscribe to the aforementioned reasons. However, the underlying reason must be for the love of your country and the true belief that you live in the greatest country in the world.

No one, and I mean no one, makes it through basic training without being helped by another recruit. You must be the type of person who offers and accepts help when needed. I have seen countless recruits try to act too hard to admit they need help or are too afraid to ask other recruits when they need help. Either way, you have to be a team player to complete a boot camp.

Do you want to join the US Army? You probably have a lot of questions about what army life and training is like. What are the benefits? How is training? What does it pay? How can you prepare?

The US Army is one of six branches of the US military. It is a strategic tool of national policy that has served our country well in peace and war for more than two centuries. Soldiers enable America to fulfill its world leadership responsibilities to protect our national interests, prevent global catastrophe, and make the world a safer place. We do this by finding peaceful solutions to the friction between nation-states, addressing the problems of human suffering and, when necessary, fighting and winning our nation’s wars – our non-negotiable contract with the American people.
