ELVERUM, Norway – An explosion a few meters away shakes an unmarked station wagon as it travels down a dirt road in a Norwegian forest.
Immediately, the two soldiers jumped from their front seats and ran to hide behind the carcass of an old rusted tank. Firing their weapons at the snow-covered hill, they called for support from the rest of their group.
This firefight is just a training exercise, but the participating soldiers are fighting to break down the last barriers for women serving in the armed forces. They are training to be part of Norway’s Jegertroppen or “Hunter Troops” – the world’s first all-female special forces unit.

More than a year after the U.S. Department of Defense lifted a long-standing ban on women serving in combat assignments on the ground, relatively few have been trained or assigned to these roles in the U.S. military.
Norway has moved very quickly to break down military gender barriers. Its parliament introduced legislation in the 1980s that opened all military roles to women. Last year, Norway became the first NATO country to introduce female conscription.
But the introduction of a female special forces unit in 2014 significantly raised the profile of women in the Norwegian armed forces.
The unit was started after the Norwegian Special Forces Command saw a huge need for female special forces – especially in places like Afghanistan where male soldiers were forbidden to interact with women. Being left out of half the population has had a negative impact on intelligence gathering and building public relations.

“When [Norway] was sent to Afghanistan, we saw that we needed female soldiers. Both as female advisers to the special unit of the Afghan police that we were training, but also when we were arresting,” said Col. Frode Kristofferson, commander of Norway’s special police. strength. “We needed female soldiers to take care of the women and children in the buildings we searched.”
“One of the benefits we see with an all-female unit is that we can have a consistent program and selection that is tailored to female personnel,” said Kristofferson, adding that at the end of the one-year program, female soldiers are just as capable as their male counterparts.
One of the members of this unit, Tonje, 22, said that this unit is proof that women can do the same work as men, even in areas full of soldiers.
“We are carrying the same weight as the boys,” said Tonje, who did not reveal his full name due to the rules of this division. “We do the same jobs.”

To qualify for the Jegertroppen, applicants must run approximately four miles carrying 60 pounds of military equipment in less than 52 minutes. That’s just three minutes less than their male counterparts who have to do the same thing in less than 49 minutes.

Tonje, who grew up in a town of about 30,000 people, said he had been interested in military service since he was young. “And I knew that I wanted to do the hardest thing I could do in the war,” he said. “When Jegertroppen came up as an option, it was like it was made for me.”
During a break from training, while the army was relaxing by the fire, 20-year-old Mari explained that she joined the army to follow in the footsteps of her grandfather and father.
“If I am needed, I think it would be a very good opportunity to serve my country and be able to participate in a positive way in the male community,” she said. “With the skills we’re getting this year, I think we can continue to build on them and become top-level soldiers, maybe like the boys.”
Commanders say an all-female unit is on the way. In a recent test, one of the female soldiers shot better than the other men in the elite group, Captain Ole Vidar, the officer in charge of the training program, said Captain Ole Vidar. He added that the women’s division also showed strong unity among its members.

“Boys see that girls are helping each other, so boys do better at that,” Vidar said.
He added that despite initial skepticism, the program was an instant success with more than 300 applications in the first year alone. And entry requirements have been raised.IRAQ skullduggery commandos and Russia’s secret death squads are among the world’s most feared special forces.
