How Many Challenger Ii.tanks Has The.british Military Lost In Action
Britain is considering supplying Ukraine with a few challenging 2 tanks, for the first time the western country has told it that it can supply Kyiv with its heavy weapons in the war against Russia.
Army Could Scrap 1/3 Of Its Challenger 2 Tank Force
No final decision has been made by Downing Street, British sources added, but Ukraine hopes a positive move by the UK could help persuade Germany to follow suit with its Panther II battle tanks later this month.
Ukraine has requested British tanks “since the summer,” another source said. But the fact is that the UK, with a total fleet of 227, has a small supply compared to what has been done by Germany and the US.
An initial report from Sky News suggested the UK was planning to supply around 10 Fighter 2s, just a fraction of the 300 Kyiv wants as it tries to build a military force to chase victory after more than 10 months of war.
There are approximately 2,000 Panther 2s in service in Europe with 13 different countries, but because they were originally made in Germany, Berlin approval would be required if any were re-exported to Ukraine.
Britain Needs Some Leveling Up In Its Military
Western nations have already announced military aid to their step-son in Ukraine this year. Last week, the United States and Germany said they would purchase 50 Bradley and 40 Marder combat vehicles.
It was followed by a statement from France to give the number – estimated at around 30 – of light AMX-10 RC armored vehicles in which it was clear that the order of the statements was organized.
Kyiv hopes for a further breakthrough or a run-up to the next meeting of the “Ramstein” contact group of Western defense ministers, which is scheduled for January 20. The United States, the group coordinates military aid to Ukraine.
Last week, the president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, said: “There is no reason why Ukraine has not yet been equipped with Western farms.” He highlighted the upcoming Ramstein meeting as a pivotal point where a decision could be made.

At the end of last year, the commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Gen. Valeriy Zaluzhny, called for 300 tanks and 600-700 combat vehicles to help Ukraine fight off Russian invaders. But until last week, Western NATO countries had refused to provide Kyiv with weapons, fearing Moscow would be turned into an escalator.
Rather, there was an attempt to send weapons, Soviet-era, more familiar to the Ukrainian military, from the former central and eastern regions. Last year, Poland and the Czech Republic sent more than 200 Soviet-era T-72 tanks to Ukraine.
Infantry fighting vehicles such as Bradleys and Marders are considered one step below main battle tanks such as US Challenger 2s, Leopards and Abrams, which carry heavy weapons and denser armor.
Western military aid has been critical to sustaining Ukraine’s support against Russia, but given the diversity of Kyiv’s arsenal, complications have arisen in making and saving parts. Although it is preferable to try and have a large force of material from one or two countries, it is considered diplomatically preferable to act together.

LONDON — Anglo-German vehicle manufacturer Rheinmetall BAE Land Systems has signed a deal with the British Ministry of Defense to upgrade the Emulator 2 main battle tank.
The £800 million (US. $1 billion) contract announced on May 7 will see 148 British army tanks upgraded to Challenger III standard.

A 35 per cent cut in Britain’s main fleet has been confirmed in a recently published review of defence, security and foreign policy. At one point, speculation among the media and analysts suggested that the government might seek to ax the entire force of the Emulator pool.
The ministry received a major boost in its budget starting this financial year, but preferred to focus on its domains such as space and cyber space.
Although Britain still seems to be interested in the future of the main war program, having held talks with Germany and France to possibly join the main project looking at the Combat System.
The main upgrade of the Emulator 2 will involve replacing the current L30 120mm gun bore with the high pressure polished L55A1 cannon. Britain is the only user of distributed networks among NATO members.

Other improvements to the tank will include new turrets, improved lookouts and upgraded protection, among other developments.
Work on the upgrade will primarily take place at the RBSL manufacturing plant in Telford, England. The company invested 20 million in the facilities there. Full operating capability for the tank is planned for 2030, with initial operating capability expected by 2027.
In 2019, then-British defense secretary Penny Mordaunt listed the fighter 2 as obsolete. New Secretary Ben Wallace has since said the upgrade represents a significant change in the modernization of the country’s land forces, increasing the lethality of the Challenger 3 standard.
The Challenger 2 has been in service for more than 25 years, but has had little in the way of upgrades to improve its capabilities on the battlefield with allies and potential adversaries like Russia.

Apart from the upgrade, RBSL is involved in the manufacture of several hundred personnel carrying armored personnel carriers for the Army. The joint venture, formed between Rheinmetall and Britain’s BAE Systems in Germany in 2019, said the deal will create hundreds of skilled jobs at the company and in its supply chain.
The two firms previously offered competing solutions for the upgrade, but that competition ended with the formation of a joint venture and subsequent joint offering.
“What a moment for RBSL, for our strength and for the success of the U.K.,” said John Abunassar, president of RBSL. “We are pleased to announce and consolidate the return of armored vehicle engineering to the U.K. This announcement comes after years of hard work and cooperation with our customers, especially in the recent extraordinary circumstances created by COVID-19.” … The British Army will receive world-class naval capability.”

President Zelensky thanked the UK, saying that the decision to send tanks “will not only strengthen us on the front line, but also send the right signal to other allies.”
Nemo 10 said that during the call Mr Sunak and Mr Zelensky also discussed the recent victories of Ukraine, as well as “the need to seize this moment with the acceleration of military and diplomatic global support”.
The news came as a series of missile attacks were launched across Ukraine on Saturday, including Kyiv, Kharkiv and Odesa.

Mr Sunak said the provocateurs, a tank battle of the British Army, were helping Kyiv’s forces to “catch Russian forces”.
Built in the late 1990s, the Emulator tank is more than 20 years old, but it will be the newest tank at the disposal of Ukraine. The lake will provide Ukraine with better protection and more accurate firepower.
The UK will begin training Ukrainian armed forces to use tanks and artillery in the coming days.
