The minimum requirement for the military and service academy is 17 years of age with parental consent or 18 years of age without parental consent. Service academy applicants must meet the age requirements from and including 1 July in the year of admission.

You must be 17-39 years old, a US citizen and have a high school diploma, 15 credit GED or GED.

Diane Mahalco: My name is Diane Mahalco. I am the superior of the medical section. The purpose of the medical examination is to ensure that the applicant is medically fit to join the military. After they check in with treatment, they are taken down the hall to the medical session. They check in. We take their blood pressure. We do their vision test. We take a hearing test. Then they are sent over to the brief to complete all the paperwork, make sure their privacy statement is signed, the HIV forms are signed. After that, they get the commander’s brief, the medical section brief, and then they’re sent back to the doctor, where they get the blood drawn for HIV, and then they give a urine sample for a drug screen. After that, they see the doctor. Male and female exams are slightly different, basically the same as if you were going to your family practice. The women’s exam includes a pregnancy test. The females, you know, take a little longer. Then the males are, basically, the males all in one room, the females one on one.

Lecturer 2: What you are going to do now are some orthoneurological manoeuvres. It will feel like we’re testing your training ability, but we’re really not. If anything we ask of you hurts or makes you feel dizzy, short of breath, that sort of thing, take a break. It’s not disqualifying to do so, and we certainly don’t want you to leave here injured.

Diane Mahalco: If they are disqualified for a medical reason, the services can choose to give a waiver for that disqualification, and they usually are. The duck walk, that’s what everyone remembers, you know. The pre-service people come in and they always, you know, tell the applicants about the duck migration. My favorite part is seeing the applicants, when they get told they’re qualified, you know, they’re really happy. They’re relieved, and you know, that just makes it worth it.

Success in any branch of the military depends on a good education. A high school diploma is most desirable. Candidates with a General Education Development (GED) certificate may apply, but some services may limit their options. It is very difficult to be considered a serious candidate without either a high school diploma or an accepted alternative credential.

For safety and security purposes, and to maintain the military’s high standards, all applicants to the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) are asked to complete a background check. Generally, felons or people with multiple convictions are not eligible to join the military. However, each branch has its own policy and in certain cases may grant waivers for moral conduct or crime:

Individuals who have been convicted of a felony as an adult or juvenile for offenses involving violence, domestic violence, illegal drugs, or sexual assault will be disqualified.

A criminal record can affect enlistment eligibility (this includes an excessive number of traffic-related violations during a one-year period).

Speaker 1: Good morning, everyone. I’m Sergeant First Class Ketcham. I am the Operations NCRC here at Boston MEPS. I’m going to talk quickly about biometric enrollment. We did this this morning when you checked in, on your first visit to MEPS.

Yes, when they first come here to MEPS, we register all applicants biometrically. Basically, we’re going to take their fingerprint. We use their primary finger, which is usually the right hand. And we also take a spare finger on the left hand. And then we’ll take a picture of them, taking 20 different points on their face. Once we get them into the database, all they have to do is show up at a station, get a copy of their fingerprint, and you know, it identifies them. And it’s also a security measure because if someone tries to get in and it’s not the person, we use another finger that’s going to tell us that as well. So it’s going to keep all the applicants safe as well.

OK, when you’re done with that, you have to come see the people in treatment, OK? You have to be open and honest with them when they sit you down there.

Speaker 2: You will see during your visit here at MEPS that the biometric process is the first step. We will also process your fingerprints and disclose any involvement you may have had with law enforcement.

They are going to ask you about 14 questions. They are going to ask you about speeding tickets, involvement with the authorities. If you have open or closed court cases, everything you need to tell them, make sure it’s documented. OK? Is that understood?

Speaker 2: To undertake to obey the orders of the President and the orders of the officers under whom they fall, and also their adherence to the Uniform Code of Military Justice. These are important concepts for them to understand and that they will be held to a higher standard than people they went to high school with.

The Army is short of recruiters, and as hundreds of thousands of American teenagers graduate from high school in June and — perhaps — turn their attention to enlisting, the service is pulling out all the stops to staff recruiting stations.

Specifically, the service is looking for 150 retired sergeants and sergeants first class, who have either been recruiters or instructors, to return to active duty.

“This capability is a normal force management tool used by the Army to meet critical capability requirements while preserving unit readiness in the operational Army,” according to a Thursday statement from the Training and Doctrine Command.
